Pediatric first aid for Caregivers & Teachers


The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is pleased to bring you theSecond Edition of its national pediatric first aid course, Pediatric First Aid for Caregivers and Teachers (PedFACTs). The PedFACTs course is designed to give caregivers and teachers the education and confidence that they need to care effectively for sick or injured children. This participant manual is the core of the PedFACTs course with features that reinforce and expand on the essential information. Each emergency topic is divided into three sections:

  • What You Should Know: Provides background information.
  • What You Should Look For: Provides assessment information.
  • What You Should Do: Provides first aid treatment information

The PedFACTs course also covers the “4Cs of Pediatric First Aid” help focus providers on the steps they need to take to safely manage emergencies: Check, Call, Care, and Complete.

New to the Second Edition, instructors can choose to teach the entire course in the classroom setting or have their students take the 2-hour online course before coming to class for the on-site skills and scenarios. A free access code that provides admittance to this 2-hour online course is included with each participant manual.

ACLS- Advanced Cardiac LIfe Support

ACLS is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac-arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented.

  • Key changes in advanced cardiovascular life support, reflecting the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
  • Basic life support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device and use of an (AED)
  • Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest
  • Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia
  • Airway management
  • Related pharmacology
  • Management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke
  • Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team
